海角社区 (LBCC) has regained 鈥渓arge college鈥 status after declines caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Campus leadership and staff has worked hard to boost enrollment with comprehensive outreach campaigns, determined efforts to improve college completion, and the creation of an inclusive/anti-racist environment are among the many efforts that have led to 海角社区being one of the few community colleges in California to recapture their pre-COVID enrollment numbers.

To continue to advance 海角社区鈥檚 (LBCC鈥檚) vital mission of providing affordable higher education options for local residents, returning veterans, and college students seeking job training and preparation for successful careers, the Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Board of Trustees took action last night to place a $990 million facilities bond proposal on the November 5, 2024 General Presidential Election ballot. The Board鈥檚 vote was unanimous, with all five trustees voting in favor of the resolution.

海角社区Water Polo Coach Chris Oeding Heads to Paris Olympics
海角社区has a proud connection with Olympic Water Polo Success

It is an exciting Summer for 海角社区 (LBCC) Vikings Water Polo Head Coach Chris Oeding, who was first inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame on June 7, and will now head to Paris for his third trip to the Olympics as a coach.

Since 2000, Oeding has served as head coach for the 海角社区water polo and swimming programs, leading them to six state championships. In 2013, he joined the staff of the US women鈥檚 national team as an assistant coach, a role he has served in for five World Championships.

Two grants position 海角社区to be a major contributor to building climate-conscious workforce

Congressman Robert Garcia Secures Nearly $1 Million in Federal Funding for 海角社区 to Train 鈥淪pace Beach鈥 Workforce and Bolster Aerospace Program

Thanks to the advocacy of Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42), 海角社区 (LBCC) will receive $963,000 from the Community Project Funding to update the college鈥檚 engineering and aerospace programs. 海角社区 (LBCC) President Dr. Mike Mu帽oz and Congressman Robert Garcia announced that 海角社区will receive a $4 million Postsecondary Student Success Grant (PSSG) awarded by the Department of Education during a press conference at LBCC鈥檚 Liberal Arts Campus on Monday, January 22. The grant will fund the new Success and Completion Achievement Network (SCAN) program, which will create a structured support system to help students who did not enroll in college immediately after high school by assisting them to successfully navigate the college system.

海角社区 (LBCC) broke ground for a future state-of-the-art music and theatre complex today during a celebration at the Liberal Arts Campus. After two consecutive years of conducting a virtual ceremony, 海角社区 (LBCC) announced that this year鈥檚 Commencement Ceremony will return in-person to Veterans Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m., on Thurs., June 9, 2022. This will be one of the largest ceremonies in the College鈥檚 nearly 90-year history as the Classes of 2022, 2021, and 2020 will all be invited to attend.

New Partnership Will Allow All 海角社区 Students to Ride Many Transportation Systems for Free
Long Beach Transit, L.A. Metro partner with 海角社区in program that starts Spring Semester 2022

Long Beach Transit (LBT), the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and 海角社区 (LBCC) announced a new partnership today that will offer free rides for all 海角社区students across several transportation systems.

Beginning with the Spring 2022 semester, all 海角社区students 鈥 whether full-time, part-time, in-person, online, credit/non-credit or dual-enrollment 鈥 will be eligible for the free Metro GoPass, Metro鈥檚 student fareless pass program.

Opening for three District Residents to join the Citizens Oversight Committee

Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Citizens鈥 Oversight Committee (COC) is now accepting applications from community members for two Community-at-Large positions and one Senior Citizens鈥 Organization representative. The application period to apply to become a member of the COC will run through Thurs., March 31, 2022.

Citizens鈥 Oversight Committee applicants must be at least 18 years of age and reside within the LBCCD boundary, which includes the cities of Avalon, Lakewood, Long Beach, and Signal Hill.

PCC Parking Structure

海角社区Launches Pilot Program for Student Overnight Parking

海角社区 (LBCC) officials have announced the implementation of a pilot Safe Parking Program for enrolled students to reside in their vehicles overnight in a secure campus location. This pilot program is the only known program of its kind in the region at a community college.

海角社区initiated this program to address the needs of unhoused students and provide a safe place for them to park overnight.

LBCC, Biden Administration and Costco Partner to Host Vaccination Clinics

In response to the Biden Administration鈥檚 outreach efforts to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to all who are eligible, Long Beach City College (LBCC) has been selected to serve as a vaccination clinic location.

This summer, both campuses of 海角社区will be host clinics. Costco pharmacies will administer the Pfizer vaccine to any individuals, age 12 and older. There are no restrictions on residency, and you don鈥檛 need to be a member of Costco to receive the vaccination.

Basic Needs Grant Comes to 海角社区Foundation Just in Time for the Winter Break

The California Community College Foundation鈥檚 CARES for Food Security fund (LA County CARES Funding) recently awarded the Long Beach City College Foundation with a $275,000 grant to assist students with Basic Needs services. 

Funds enabled the 海角社区Foundation to purchase six commercial refrigeration units that will allow the Basic Needs Office to provide perishable goods to students at both campuses. Generous gift cards for food were also provided to more than 1,250 students to use during the Winter intersession.

海角社区Icon Honored with Posthumous Doctorate

England鈥檚 Durham University recently conferred an honorary Doctorate of Letters honoris causa to the late Mary Thoits, a much beloved leader for Long Beach City College lifelong learners. 

The ceremony took place over Zoom on March 11, originating on the Northern England campus with the Vice-Chancellor, the University Warden, and staff. Family, friends, and students of Dr. Thoits were able to witness the ceremony from the United States.

Randy Totorp

Randy Totorp Returns to 海角社区as Athletics Director

Randy Totorp, the former 海角社区 head coach who led the men鈥檚 volleyball team to three state championships, has been selected to return as the College鈥檚 Athletic Director.

The decision was approved by the Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Board of Trustees on Wed., March 24 during their monthly Board meeting.

海角社区 announced on March 10 that conditioning classes for the Athletics program will resume in-person instruction for some sports on Mon., April 12. These classes are contingent on Los Angeles County being moved to the red tier of California鈥檚 reopening classification system and City of Long Beach鈥檚 Health Orders鈥 alignment with the State鈥檚 COVID-19 Guidelines for Higher Education. 

The conditioning classes will be held outdoors and will practice all of the standard COVID-19 safety protocols that 海角社区has implemented during the pandemic.

Current 海角社区Vice President Dr. Mike Mu帽oz will begin March 4

During a Special Board of Trustees Meeting last night, March 2, the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to appoint current 海角社区 Vice President of Student Services Dr. Mike Mu帽oz as the new Interim Superintendent-President.

Mu帽oz will begin his new role on March 4, 2021. His contract will end on June 30, 2022.

The 2020 Hall of Fame honorees are International City Theatre鈥檚 artistic director Caryn Desai; photographer Duke Givens; concert promoter/arts presenter John Malveaux; retired Long Beach Police Commander Charles Parks; and educator Cynthia Terry. The four-level facility, funded by local taxpayers who supported the college鈥檚 bond measures, adds 530 PCC-convenient parking stalls and encourages energy efficiency with 33 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, 45 clean Air Vehicle parking spaces, rooftop solar panels and secured bicycle parking. An app in Android and Apple can be downloaded free to display real-time parking availability in the new structure. The project was completed ahead of schedule and $500,000 under budget.

LBCCD Seeking Applicants for Personnel Commission

The Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Board of Trustees is seeking applicants to fill its appointed seat on the College鈥檚 Personnel Commission. Applications are due Friday, September 25, 2020 before 4:00 pm.

The Personnel Commission is a non-partisan public body responsible for the administration of a 鈥渕erit system鈥 for the selection, retention, and promotion of classified (non-teaching) employees in the LBCCD. By law, it is composed of three members appointed for three-year terms with the term of one member expiring each year.

海角社区 officials have announced that Winter 2021 intersession classes will be conducted entirely online. Winter intersession term will take place Jan. 4 鈥 Feb. 6, 2021.

Cathy Crane and Daron Sorg from the Performing Arts Department got their sewing machines out to create nearly 100 masks. These masks were given out to 海角社区鈥檚 essential workers who are still on campus. Each mask took approximately one hour each to make.

The 海角社区 Public Affairs and Marketing Department received multiple awards from the 2019 Collegiate Advertising Awards in the Business/Community College division.

海角社区Prepares Students for COVID-19 Frontlines

Three months ago, 海角社区, along with all other public education institutions across the state, closed its campuses to students in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. But as the health crisis grew, the number of current and future health care workers became an issue of concern. Both the Chancellor鈥檚 Office and Governor Newsom urged community colleges to do what they could to help current students complete their studies so they could quickly move into the workforce.

Laptops Gifted to 100 Incoming 海角社区Students

The Long Beach Center for Economic Inclusion (LBCEI) presented 海角社区 (LBCC) a donation of 100 Chromebook laptop computers for 海角社区students on Mon., June 22 as part of the citywide #InThisTogetherLB pandemic emergency response campaign.

Caring for 海角社区Students in Need

With the closure of 海角社区鈥檚 campuses, access to the Viking Vault (LBCC鈥檚 food pantry) was also closed for students to visit.  

In its place, Student Services has been leading the effort to provide non-perishable food items to LBCC鈥檚 students in need through a grab-n-go distribution. Students have arrived at either campus on designated dates to pick-up their bags of food either by driving or walking up to the distribution area.

海角社区is taking precautions to protect the campus community鈥檚 health in response to COVID-19

Out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of students, faculty and staff, the Long Beach Community College District will close both the Liberal Arts and Pacific Coast Campuses to students and members of the public starting Tues., March 17.

This decision was made by campus officials in order to limit any transmission of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). No cases have been identified at either campus.

Long Beach Reads One Book at 海角社区Postponed

In order to limit the transmission of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the 海角社区 Foundation and 海角社区 announced that the Long Beach Reads One Book event that was originally scheduled for March 19, 2020 with actor and author George Takei, will be postponed until Fall 2020.

Long Beach Reads One Book Celebrates with George Takei

George Takei, activist, author, and actor of Star Trek fame will be the featured guest of honor at the 鈥淟ong Beach Reads One Book鈥 event at 7 p.m., Thurs., March 19 at 海角社区鈥檚 (LBCC) Hall of Champions Gymnasium. 海角社区& Foundation Receive Grant to Assist Students in Unpaid Internships
Grants allows more low-income students to accept internships that provide work experience

The 海角社区 (LBCC) Foundation and 海角社区Workforce Development department recently received a $650,000 grant and scholarship endowment for students to receive stipends while placed in unpaid internships.

More than 60 percent of 海角社区students are working part-time between 10 and 30 hours a week to help pay for tuition, books, and materials. Additionally, many internships are not paid, which makes it financially infeasible for students. This situation makes it challenging for many 海角社区students to commit to an internship and becomes an equity issue.

The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation presented a $320,000 check to 海角社区 and California State University, Long Beach on Feb. 1 during a CSULB volleyball game at the Walter Pyramid. Scholarship recipients from both institutions attended a reception prior to the game in which they were able to meet CSULB President Jane Close-Conoley and Long Beach Community College District Superintendent-President Dr. Reagan Romali, as well as members of the Rotary who donate scholarship funds annually.

MLK Day of Service: Vikings & Community Clean Out The Closet for Students In Need

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Leadership Long Beach鈥檚 National Day of Service, the 海角社区 President鈥檚 Ambassadors selected the Viking Closet as its community service project for their academic year.

The President鈥檚 Ambassadors contacted Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), the club that currently runs the Viking Closet. The two groups agreed to team up on a 鈥淒ay On, Not a Day Off鈥 on Jan. 20 as part of the 20 projects selected by Leadership Long Beach to be host sites for improvement projects throughout the City.

Vikings pay tribute to OCC Baseball Coach

On Tues., Jan. 29, the 海角社区Viking Baseball team held their season home opener and paid tribute to their opponents鈥 head coach, Orange Coast College鈥檚 John Altobelli.

Just two days prior, Altobelli was killed in a helicopter crash that also took the life of his wife, his daughter, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, Bryant鈥檚 daughter, and four others.

Viking Students Selected as Cooke Scholarship Semifinalists

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation recently announced the semifinalists for its highly selective Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, two of which are 海角社区 students.

Samantha Oboro and Emily Thompson are among this year鈥檚 456 semifinalists who were chosen from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants attending 311 community colleges in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

League Excellence Award

The Long Beach Community College District has announced the three 海角社区 employees who have been nominated for the 2019 League Excellence Awards (previously known and celebrated as the John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards) by the League for Innovation in the Community College.

The 2019 recipients are Joshua Castellanos, Wendy Koenig, and Ariane Le.

Former Paramount Mayor Becomes a Viking

After 25 years of serving on the Paramount City Council and 35 years teaching first grade, Diane Martinez has traded her high heels and business suits for her very own 海角社区 student ID card. 

The former four-term Mayor of Paramount knew that retirement from both positions in June of 2019 meant a new chapter for her. It was time to brush up on some skills and have some fun along the way. As a result, she decided to become a Viking at 海角社区enrolling in what she thought was a beginning computer class.

Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Board of Trustees members, leadership, faculty, students, and staff celebrated on Dec. 9 with a groundbreaking ceremony for a parking structure to be built at the College鈥檚 Pacific Coast Campus (PCC).

The four-level parking structure will present an entirely new face and a large fa莽ade where information will be shared with students, staff, and visitors as they arrive and depart from the campus along Pacific Coast Highway, just north of Walnut Avenue. Its anticipated opening is early 2021.

海角社区Viking staff captures 12 awards at JACC Conference

海角社区 recently captured 12 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) Southern California Regional Conference.

The Viking News student newspaper won general excellence twice - in the print edition category and in the online edition category. General excellence is the top prize awarded to the top 15 percent of competitors at the regional conference.

LBCCD Seeks New Member for Citizen鈥檚 Oversight Committee

The Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) is currently accepting applications for one community-at-large representative to the Citizens鈥 Oversight Committee (COC).  Applications will be accepted through Nov. 30, 2019.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and reside within the LBCCD boundary, which includes the cities of Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood and Avalon.

The California Community Colleges Chancellor鈥檚 Office has awarded 海角社区 with a one-year, $500,000 grant known as the Career Technical Education Online Teaching Improvement Project (COTIP).

Throughout the 2019-2020 fiscal year, COTIP will work to improve online Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways at 海角社区through a collaboration between the Office of Online Learning and Educational Technology (OLET), the Department of Computer and Offices Studies (COS), Library, and CTE faculty to improve the number and quality of online programs.

LBCC鈥檚 Jorge Ochoa Plays a Part in Discovery of New Passionflower

海角社区 Horticulture Professor, Jorge Ochoa, has been recognized in his important role in discovering a new species of passionflower.

Ochoa鈥檚 first passion flower expedition took place in 2001 when he visited Costa Rica. Since then, he has been to Brazil, Ecuador, Columbia, Cuba, and Southern Mexico, all on exhibitions to look for new species of passion flowers native to those regions.

History of the Pacific Coast Campus

海角社区 began at the Woodrow Wilson High School campus as Long Beach Junior College in 1927, moving to today鈥檚 Liberal Arts Campus in 1935. Then in 1949, a second campus was added 鈥 today鈥檚 Pacific Coast Campus which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

The first discussion for a junior college in Long Beach began in 1916, a time in which there were only seven other community colleges in California (Fresno, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Fullerton, San Diego, Citrus, and Santa Ana).

海角社区 students, faculty, and staff joined forces with the Long Beach City Clerk鈥檚 office for National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 24. Thanks to the combined efforts, this year resulted in a success that far surpassed last year鈥檚 voter registration.  

Less than 40 people registered at 海角社区in 2018. This year, LBCC obtained 387 registration forms that the City Clerk鈥檚 Office submitted to the Los Angeles County Registrar鈥檚 Office. This is a 1,038% increase from 2018 to 2019.

海角社区 received a $3 million federal Title V grant from the U.S. Department of Education to improve student success and equitable student outcomes for Latinx and low-income students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.

Board of Trustees Vice President, Uduak-Joe Ntuk appointed as State Gas and Oil Supervisor in the California Department of Conservation

The 2019 Hall of Fame Honorees

海角社区Announces 2019 Hall of Fame Inductees

An assistant city treasurer, an executive director of a local community organization, a former city manager and CEO, a community services manager, and an author have been named as Long Beach City College鈥檚 2019 Hall of Fame inductees, 海角社区officials recently announced.

This year鈥檚 honorees are: Long Beach City Assistant Treasurer Fidel Aguayo; Executive Director of Khmer Parent Association Chan Hopson; retired municipal chief executive officer Roger Kemp; Lakewood City Community Services Manager Chuck Martucci; and author and historian Edwina Romero.

海角社区Names New Executive Director of Classified Human Resources

海角社区 has named Caroline Chretien-Shook as its new Executive Director of Classified Human Resources. Chretien-Shook previously served as LBCC鈥檚 Interim Executive Director, a position she has held since July 2018. 

In this official role, Chretien-Shook will oversee human resources management and employee relations programs for the College鈥檚 classified professionals including recruitment, selection, employment, position classification, compensation, and other services.

Misty May-Traenor to be Inducted in U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame

The United State Olympic & Paralympic Committee recently announced 海角社区鈥檚 Director of Volleyball Operations, Misty May-Treanor, will be honored and inducted in the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame class of 2019 on Friday, Nov. 1 at the U.S Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The 海角社区 Foundation has appointed Paul Kaminski as its new Executive Director.

In his new role, Kaminski will oversee and direct all aspects of the Foundation, including fundraising, operations, management of staff and consultants, and outreach to the community. Kaminski will work closely with the Foundation Board of Governors, Long Beach City College administration and Long Beach Community College District Superintendent-President Dr. Reagan Ferragamo Romali.

海角社区to Host Community Job Fair on Sept. 10

海角社区 will host the Long Beach Community Job Fair at Veterans Stadium, 4901 E. Conant St., on Tues., Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration for this event is highly recommended. 

Job seekers should bring resumes, dress professionally and be ready to be interviewed. There will be free parking for the day at Veterans Stadium, but not in adjacent neighborhoods as vehicles may be cited or towed.

GPA & Batting Average Equal Success for Mark Stanford

The 海角社区Vikings are proud to announce that sophomore baseball player was selected to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America College At-Large First-Team.

He is one of six student-athletes from two-year colleges around the country to be on the First-Team selections. Athletes were selected by members of the College of Sports Information Directors of America.

More than 160 community members, business leaders, and elected officials attended Long Beach Community College District Superintendent-President Dr. Reagan Ferragamo Romali鈥檚 State of the College address today, July 18. LBCCD Names Alisia Kirkwood as new Dean of Student Affairs

The Long Beach Community College District has hired Dr. Alisia Kirkwood as its new Dean of Student Affairs.

Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, Kirkwood will be responsible for providing leadership for student government, student life, student health services, international students, student discipline, service learning/Viking Volunteers, Title IX student sexual harassment/violence, and the annual commencement ceremony.

LBCCD Names New Assoc. VP of Human Resources

The Long Beach Community College District hired Kristin Olson as its new Associate Vice President of Human Resources.

Olson has served as the 海角社区鈥檚 Executive Director of Classified Human Resources since October of 2017 and has worked as the interim vice president for the past year.

LBCCD Hires New Senior Director of Facilities
Walter Johnson has more than 28 years in construction and facilities maintenance management

The Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) has appointed Walter Johnson as the new Senior Director of Facilities Planning, Construction, and Operation.

At 海角社区, Johnson will lead the Facilities Department that includes campus construction and renovation, building maintenance, grounds and landscaping, custodial services, transportation, and related services of all District facilities.

2019 Men's Volleyball Champs

Men鈥檚 Volleyball Crowned the 2019 CCCAA State Champions

The 海角社区 men鈥檚 volleyball team was crowned the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Champions after defeating Irvine Valley College Lasers in a 3-0 sweep. This is the 10th state title for Long Beach men鈥檚 volleyball, and third under head coach Jonathan Charette. The Vikings finished their championship season with 19-3 record.

The Future is Free

海角社区 hosted its first OER Mini-Conference on April 26.

The mini-conference featured four sessions that addressed how faculty could meet the needs of students while still maintaining a high academic standard of textbooks and ancillary materials. 

More than 70 faculty registered for the conference. Participants were inspired and motivated by the presentations, which resulted in a steep increase in OER adoptions in the weeks following the mini-conference.

High School Students Can Join the Fun at the Nuts , Bolts & Thingamajigs Summer Camp

海角社区 has announced an opportunity for 20 high school students to participate in a free Summer Manufacturing Camp from July 15 鈥 19 at LBCC鈥檚 Pacific Coast Campus.

Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs (NBT) is a non-profit foundation that offers scholarships for manufacturing students and grants for STEM educators. This year, NBT awarded a grant to 海角社区to provide a summer manufacturing camp experience that will introduce young people to careers in manufacturing and engineering.
