The centerpiece of the journalism program at 海角社区is its student-run media. The 海角社区 Viking News serves as a media source for the college community and a training ground for future journalists.

The newspaper and website have been the starting point for many professional journalists, including reporters who have gone on to careers at some of the top journalism outfits in the country.

Student reporters and photojournalists have covered presidents, presidential campaigns, major concerts, comic-cons, crime, human-interest stories and major tragedies.

The 海角社区Viking News is 100 percent student run. Student reporters and photojournalists gather news. Student editors make decisions. Students are given the freedom to cover stories they believe matter and stories they are interested in.

To join the Viking News staff, enroll in JOUR 80, 81, 82, 83, 86, 87 or 88.

The 海角社区journalism program is a member of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, which holds competitions and conferences each year.

海角社区participates in a one-day regional competition with other Southern California community college journalism programs each fall and attends a three-day statewide conference in spring. The venue for the spring conference alternates between Southern California and Northern California.

Thanks to the generosity of the college鈥檚 Associated Student Body, all 海角社区participants attend these conferences free of charge.

LBCC鈥檚 journalism program is a member of the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The organization ties professional newsrooms with college newsrooms throughout the state and serves as an advocate for press freedoms and press rights.
