Jacaranda Essay Contest


The English Department and the 海角社区Foundation are pleased to announce the Jacaranda Essay Contest to acknowledge students for outstanding work in composition and literature classes at LBCC. The essays will be assessed by a panel of academic faculty and staff for each category and judges based on composition, format, and documentation.

The Annual Donald Drury Award in Creative Writing

The 海角社区 Foundation & the Creative Writing Program are pleased to present the Donald Drury Award in Creative Writing to acknowledge students for outstanding work in creative writing classes. The Donald Drury award is given annually to one or more creative writing students whose work shows outstanding merit in the genre of either poetry or prose fiction. 

This award was established by the friends and family of Donald Drury, who died in 1989, to honor his distinguished career as a teacher of creative writing. The guidelines of the award were set by the friends and family of Donald Drury who funded the competition under the auspices of the Drury Award, 海角社区 Foundation.

BECOME A TUTOR: Student Job at LBCC


Start your career in Creative Writing by becoming a Writing Tutor or an Embedded Tutor in the Writing and Reading Success Center at 海角社区. Writing Tutors help students with their academic and creative writing assignments. Embedded Tutors work with faculty to help entire classes. Becoming an Embedded Tutor is excellent training for those who wish to become teachers themselves one day. You must be a full-time student to work as a tutor.

海角社区English Majors & Minors Club LogoThe English Majors and Minors Club is a student-focused group, sharing a passion for literature, creative writing, and reading. EMM Club members work in concert with the Creative Writing Faculty to design and publish the literary journal, SAGA. Club members organize and host literary events, open mics, and writing contests throughout the fall and spring semesters.

SAGA Literary Journal


English Majors organize, manage, and design their annual student-run publication, SAGA literary Journal.海角社区Saga Literary Journal Volume six

SAGA Literary Journal is a collaborative effort by 海角社区鈥檚 Creative Writing Faculty and student editors of the English Majors and Minors Club. LBCC鈥檚 English Department supports SAGA鈥檚 annual publication of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Many of the works featured in SAGA are developed in the English Department鈥檚 creative writing course workshops. SAGA also publishes works from public submissions.

 

 

The History of the English Building

The English Department鈥檚 P-Building was completed in 1935 and is 海角社区鈥檚 oldest structure. Renovated in 2019, it is the only surviving building on the Liberal Arts campus from architect Kirtland Cutter鈥檚 original plans for the college. To see more historical drawings and photos, please visit our history page.
